Microchipping provides permanent identification as it is a microchip the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the skin. 

Benefits: provides proof of ownership, increases chances of recovery if your dog gets lost or stolen (shelters and veterinarians scan to retrieve information), and compliance with travel requirements if you ever have to fly with your dog.
